Today, The St. Louis County Depot connects culture and curiosity. It even says that on our website!
But as a historic passenger rail station, we used to literally connect communities as a transit hub. Hundreds of thousands of people traveled through our building over the years, each with their own lives and stories.
Passengers lingered here, awaiting their trains; old friends were reunited in the Great Hall; and employees at all levels kept everything operating. There are a few people who we can definitively place inside the building over the years, but most will remain anonymous.
As someone deeply invested in learning the history of The Depot, I find it incredibly frustrating how little we know about the stories of those who came here. Many notable people came to Duluth and St. Louis County during the golden age of passenger rail, and statistically, some had to have come through The Depot.
In our latest video series “Probably at The Depot,” we wildly speculate about the famous figures who once walked through our Great Hall…Or at least potentially did. It’s another fabulous run of videos produced by our friend Mike Scholtz.
From Mark Twain and Paul Robeson to Joe Gomer and Judy Garland, you can check out the full series on The Depot’s YouTube channel right now.
You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about people who definitely came to The Depot! Are those confirmed visitors famous? We’ll leave that up to you to decide. They’re certainly famous amongst those of us who spend most of our day reading through historic newspaper articles, and certainly a large portion of the population does … I assume.
