Vern Northrup honors the land’s ability to act as a story teller, using his photography as an interpreter to communicate what is effectively described in Ojibwe as Akinomaage – to gain knowledge from the Earth. Shooting only with the camera on his smart phone, Northrup captures the rhythm of nature, the preservation of tradition and the relationship between resilience and sustainability in the setting of where he grew up. Northrup effectively creates nostalgia for those familiar with the area while fostering curiosity for those who aren’t; relaying messages from the Earth to bring awareness and wonder for all to see.
